At first, there where no kings but there where classes of nobility. There where the nobles also called “Jarls”, the middle class called “Karls” and the slaves called "Thralls". The Thralls had not much rights. Often, when they weren’t able to work anymore, the where killed. The people could easily move classes (involuntarily) while getting or loosing money.

Later, some powerful peoples that had a lot of money or/and land and became the kings of Sweden, Norway and Denmark (Iceland had never kings). Kingship, however, didn’t become a important and powerful leadership rule.
